Biological Safety Cabinets: Maintenance and Validation

This 1-day practical course is designed primarily for maintenance technicians and those wanting an introduction to the principles of testing, validating biological safety cabinets.

The course will provide delegates with the theory found in our online eLearning course, covering test and validation methods, according to BS EN 12469 complementing this with the practical experience of carrying out air flow tests, both inflow and down flow, along with setting up and preparing for an operator protection factor test.

What you need to know

  • Cost: The cost for this course is £395 + VAT per person, invoiced and payable before attendance.
  • Duration: This course will be delivered over 1-day at The Pirbright Institute, Surrey, UK and will run from 09:00 to 17:00
  • The course will be delivered in English and conclude with a written assessment. 
  • A certificate of completion will be awarded to those passing the assessment.
  • Please note that a 4–5-hour theory only eLearning course is also offered as an alternative to this instructor led course.

Course pre requisites

Delegates will be expected to have the basic knowledge of the operation and use of biological safety cabinets. An understanding of testing and validation would be advantageous but is not essential.

Learning objectives

  • To understand the background & history of biological safety cabinets (BSCs).
  • To review how all three classes of BSCs work.
  • To be introduced to the maintenance checks, carried out before testing.
  • To be introduced to the four BSC tests.

About the trainers

Training in Biocontainment Engineering is led by Howard Rose. Howard is responsible for the development and delivery of specialist training courses aimed at engineering professionals overseeing the safe operation of high containment facilities (in particular at biosafety levels 3 and 4).

Howard returned to the Pirbright Institute after a role in their Learning and Development function and now brings his passion for developing people and engineering together.  Before joining the Institute, Howard was self-employed designing and delivering a range of learning interventions for organisations including Siemens, Royal Mail and Johnson & Johnson. Prior to this his background was in manufacturing and defence engineering, spending two years working alongside the Royal Saudi Airforce on various aircraft systems.
