Athena Swan at Pirbright

We are proud to have been awarded the Athena Swan Silver Award in July 2023.

The Athena Swan Charter is a framework from AdvanceHE (previously the Equality Challenge Unit) which is used across the globe to support and transform gender equality within higher education and research.

Established in 2005 to encourage and recognise commitment to advancing the careers of women in science, technology, engineering, maths and medicine (STEMM) employment, the Charter is now used to address gender inequality more broadly, and not just barriers to progression that affect women.

The Athena SWAN Charter is based on 10 key principles:

  1. To recognise talents for all
  2. To advance gender equality
  3. To recognise disciplinary differences
  4. To tackle the gender pay gap
  5. To remove obstacles faced by (in particular) women, at major points of career development
  6. To address the negative consequences of short-term contracts
  7. To tackle discrimination against trans people
  8. To demonstrate senior commitment
  9. To make structural and cultural changes to advance gender equality
  10. To consider intersectionality

By being part of Athena SWAN, we are committing to a progressive charter. Based on a methodology of self-assessment, peer review and continuous progression, we are continuously revising and developing our policies, practices, action plans and culture in the wider community.
