At Pirbright we ensure that animal care follows the requirements of the Code of Practice for the Housing and Care of Animals used in Scientific Procedures and strive to adopt higher standards where practicable and applicable.
Researchers working with animals at Pirbright must meet high ethical standards and adhere to strict legislation that safeguards animal welfare in the UK.
The Institute was one of 13 organisations who received the first Leader in Openness award from Understanding Animal Research (UAR) in 2019. The award, given for three years (2019 - 2022) recognised Pirbright’s commitment to the UAR Concordat on Openness on Animal Research.
The Institute continues to champion transparency and openness on using animals in research and has been awarded the Leader in Openness Award for 2022-2025.
