Biological Safety Cabinets for Biosafety Professionals and Laboratory Managers: eLearning

Biological Safety Cabinets (BSCs) are one of the most biosafety-critical items of equipment in any biological laboratory. When used and maintained correctly, BSCs reduce the risk arising from handling of hazardous biological agents by protecting the operator and the environment from exposure to infectious aerosols. This eLearning course provides information on the correct and safe use and operation of Class I, II and III BSCs in accordance with the UK and European legal framework (including including EN 12469:2000 and BS 5726:2005).

This course is designed primarily for health, safety and biosafety professionals and facility managers who:

  • Seek to gain comprehensive knowledge of BSC use and operation.
  • Are involved in planning, designing, commissioning or upgrading biomedical facilities.

Topics include

  • Principles of BSC design and operation
  • Air extraction systems (hard-ducted, recirculatory, thimble and by-pass)
  • Installation and commissioning
  • Testing and validation requirements
  • Ergonomics of use
  • Monitoring of operation
  • Good working practices
  • Cleaning and decontamination (including fumigation)
  • Emergency procedures

What you need to know

Course pre-requisites

Basic experience of working within biological laboratories is recommended.

  • Describe a procedure to be followed in case of various BSC emergencies (including a spill)

About the trainers

Training in biosafety processes is led by Adrian K Zagrajek. Adrian joined Pirbright Training in 2020 to develop and deliver specialist training courses aimed at biosafety professionals who oversea operation of biological containment facilities. Previously, Adrian spent 5 years working as a research scientist studying vector competence for human hazard group 3 viruses (e.g. chikungunya, dengue, Rift Valley fever). During this time, Adrian was involved in management of several high containment facilities.

Adrian holds a PhD in Infection and Immunity (Virology) from the University of Edinburgh. He is a Member and a registered Biosafety Practitioner of the Institute of Safety in Technology and Research (ISTR). Adrian develops all biosafety-related courses in collaboration with subject matter experts from the Health, Safety and Biosafety (HSBS) Team of The Pirbright Institute.
