A leading researcher dedicated to supporting the careers of future scientists has received the Distinguished Veterinary Immunologist Award from the 14th International Veterinary Immunology Symposium (IVIS2025).

Professor Gary Entrican, who sits on The Pirbright Institute’s Science Advisory Board, was recognised for his outstanding research in veterinary immunology, with a focus on infection biology, distinguished service to the veterinary immunology community, and his dedication to training and mentoring the next generation of scientists in the field.

Receiving the accolade at the conference in Vienna, Professor Entrican said: “It is a huge honour to receive the Zoetis IUIS VIC Distinguished Veterinary Immunologist Award.

“I have been very fortunate to have been inspired, mentored, encouraged and challenged by so many great scientists throughout my research career. To be recognised for promoting the same positive values and qualities to support the next generation of veterinary immunologists is truly humbling.”

Currently Honorary Professor at The Roslin Institute within the College of Medicine and Veterinary Medicine at The University of Edinburgh, Professor Gary Entrican’s career has focused on the development of vaccines and diagnostic tests for the control of infectious diseases of ruminant livestock.

He has developed many immunological tools and technologies, including kits for in vitro differentiation of ruminant dendritic cells and cytokine ELISAs during his time at Moredun Research Institute (1986-2019).

Professor Bryan Charleston MRCVS FRS, Director of The Pirbright Institute, said: “We’re delighted to congratulate Gary on his award. In tandem with his huge contribution to the field of veterinary immunology, Gary has championed the values of Equality, Diversity and Inclusion and the creation of positive Research Cultures. His advocacy aligns with our commitment to EDI, fostering a supportive environment where everyone can thrive and contribute to groundbreaking scientific research.”

Professor Entrican has previously been recognised for his contribution to veterinary immunology in the UK, receiving the British Society of Immunology’s inaugural Outstanding Contribution to the BSI Award in 2023.
