The Pirbright Institute is pleased to announce the appointment of Helen Watts as Interim Chief Executive Officer, effective immediately.
Helen brings a wealth of leadership, financial and operational experience to the role, having served as the Institute’s Director of Finance and Company Secretary since joining Pirbright in 2019. As a member of the Senior Leadership Board, she has played a pivotal role in supporting the Institute’s strategic direction and overseeing key operational functions, including Finance, Procurement, IT, Stores and People Services.
A Fellow of the Institute of Chartered Accountants in England and Wales (ICAEW), Helen qualified with Ernst & Young after earning a degree in Managerial and Administrative Studies from the University of Aston, Birmingham. Throughout her career, she has held senior roles across both the private, public and not-for-profit sectors, working with leading organisations in the marine industry and renowned British institutions.
As Company Secretary, Helen regularly attends the Institute’s Trustee Director Board and is an active member of the Development Programme Board, alongside several working groups responsible for overseeing critical aspects of the Institute’s operations and capital development.
In her role as Interim CEO, Helen will be supported by Dr Andrew White, Director of Risk and Assurance, and Professor Dan Horton, Director of Science. Together, they will provide continuity across the Institute’s operations, scientific programmes and strategic initiatives during the transition period.
Helen’s focus as Interim CEO will be to build on the strong foundations and achievements established under the leadership of Professor Bryan Charleston, ensuring the Institute continues to deliver world-leading science, strengthen its partnerships and advance its strategic objectives. Working closely with the Trustee Director Board, she will also play a key role in supporting the process to appoint the Institute’s next permanent Director and Chief Executive Officer.
