BIS announces new UK Agricultural Technology Strategy

This week the government launched its UK Agricultural Technology Strategy, looking to make the UK a world leader in science and technology development for agriculture.

Breakthroughs in nutrition, informatics, satellite imaging, remote sensing, meteorology and precision farming mean the agriculture sector is one of the world’s fastest growing sectors.

Developed in partnership with industry, the Agricultural Technologies Strategy will ensure everyone from farmers and retailers, to cooks and shoppers share the benefits these exciting opportunities bring.

Twinning with Uganda

It is widely recognised that a global approach is required to combat the rapid and widespread occurrence of virus diseases in livestock. Playing a pivitol role in the fight against these economically important diseases are The Pirbright Institute’s Reference Laboratories which provide an essential diagnostic and advice service not only to the UK Government but also to the United Nations Food and Agriculture Organisation (FAO), the European Union (EU) and the World Organisation for Animal Health (OIE).

Nature versus technology

Last autumn, students from Merrist Wood College were invited to participate in a competition to come up with a design for a quadrangle of land situated adjacent to the Institute’s new high containment laboratories currently being built on site. The competition formed part of The Pirbright Institute’s local community engagement programme and the concept behind the Landscape Design Competition for 2013 was ‘Nature versus Technology’.
