I, Professor Bryan Charleston, on behalf of The Pirbright Institute, confirm our commitment to the priority areas outlined in the Concordat for the Environmental Sustainability of Research and Innovation Practice.

The Pirbright Institute fully supports the priority areas outlined in the concordat. We will deliver against all the priorities in practice and recognise our responsibilities as a signatory, as set out in the concordat.

By signing this concordat, we recognise the need to change how we conduct research and innovation as well as promote wider solutions. We also agree to take shared action now and into the future to reduce and eliminate our own environmental impacts and emissions and achieve the transition to sustainable practices.

The priority areas of the Concordat are aligned to our work as a UKRI Biotechnology and Biological Sciences Research Council Strategic Institute. Its ethos is embedded in our culture, our organisational strategy and reflected in Pirbright and UKRI BBSRC policies supporting sustainable procurement, travel, and construction, aligning with UKRI’s ambition to be carbon-zero by 2040. UKRI itself is a signatory of the Concordat.

We recognise our responsibility as a research-intensive National Capability to support world-changing science which aims to address issues of environmental sustainability whilst minimising the negative environmental impacts of our work. We also acknowledge the importance of continued progress in this area both at Pirbright and across the wider sector.

Yours sincerely,

Bryan Charleston signature
