Ahmed Mohamed Elrefaey

Ahmed is a research scientist in the Arthropod Genetics group at The Pirbright Institute.

Ahmed completed his BSc. in Pharmaceutical Sciences at Alexandria University, Egypt. Beside working as a community pharmacist, he pursued his graduate studies in Belgium where he obtained a master’s degree in Molecular Biology, an interuniversity program jointly organized by KULeuven, Vrije Universiteit Brussel and Universiteit Antwerpen in 2019. During his master’s at Rega Institute for Medical Research, he worked under the supervision of Prof. Johan Neyts and Prof. Leen Delang, assessing the activity of antiviral compounds against cell-fusing agent virus and yellow fever virus.

In January 2020, Ahmed’s keen interest in molecular virology and mosquito molecular biology led him to join Luke Alphey’s group with the aim to develop beyond-state-of-art methods for broad-spectrum blocking arboviruses transmission by mosquitoes.
