Researchers from The Pirbright Institute, University of Bristol, Cardiff University and University of Oxford have generated tools that allow scientists to understand a vital area of the pig immune system which was previously inaccessible.
Scientists at The Pirbright Institute have been awarded over £300,000 to develop a faster and more efficient method for infectious bronchitis virus (IBV) vaccine production. The virus causes a poultry respiratory disease which is the most economically important infectious disease affecting chickens in the UK. Infection with IBV reduces weight gain and egg production, in addition to making birds more susceptible to bacterial infections.
Researchers from The Pirbright Institute have examined the genetic material of foot-and-mouth disease virus (FMDV) samples collected from eastern and southern Africa, and discovered two novel virus groups. These new groups, termed genotypes, will help scientists to understand the genetic variability of FMDV and identify the extent of viruses with potential to cause outbreaks in domestic animals.
