Matthew is a placement student from Bath University who is doing a year placement as part of his BSc in Biochemistry. He will be spending his year in the orbivirus research group where he will be looking at Bluetongue virus (BTV) replication in a variety of cell lines. Learning about microbiology at university was the main driver towards doing his placement here as he found a passion for the subject.
BTV is a disease of ruminants with serious consequences for the animal’s health. Vaccines are available, but the disease still has many economic impacts as well as disrupting the trade of animals. It is a vector borne virus spread by biting midges.
