Joe is currently a student at Cardiff University, studying Biological Sciences, on a third year placement at The Pirbright Institute. During his time at university, Joe was particularly interested in cell biology and the study of disease and now wishes to apply his knowledge and skills to solving major health challenges.
Joe will spend his placement year in the PRRS research group where he will be assisting with the characterisation of recombinant PRRSV vaccine strains and the study of their immunogenicity and efficacy in pigs.
Porcine reproductive and respiratory syndrome virus (PRRSV) is one of the most economically important swine diseases in the world and current live attenuated and killed vaccines have only a modest impact. There is therefore an urgent need to develop improved vaccines.
