Technical Manager - Disinfectant Testing

Lorraine Frost is the technical manager for the Disinfectant testing laboratory and a senior member of the Non-Vesicular Reference Laboratory (NVRL). She has worked within the NVRL for eight years carrying out diagnostic testing for Bluetongue, African horse sickness, African swine fever, morbillivirus and capripox viruses. Lorraine has recently become technical manager of the Disinfectant testing laboratory. She has a background in anatomical sciences and forensic science (University of Dundee, UK; Florida International University, USA), and has research interests in improving diagnostics and control of transboundary veterinary diseases and developing disinfectant efficacy tests for veterinary viruses.

As a member of the NVRL, Lorraine supports the work of the laboratory which includes providing advice and reagents to other laboratories as well as delivery of the annual BTV proficiency test scheme.

As technical manager for disinfectant testing, Lorraine runs the laboratory which provides efficacy approval testing against foot-and-mouth disease virus and swine vesicular disease virus. This testing is undertaken for national and international private customers and on behalf of Defra. This testing enables Defra to maintain a list of approved disinfectants for use during an outbreak of notifiable animal or zoonotic diseases and provides private customers confirmation of efficacy. The efficacy test is ISO/IEC17025 accredited and Lorraine plays a key role in ensuring this standard is maintained and improved. Lorraine has research interests to develop further disinfectant testing methodologies to increase the repertoire of the laboratory and explore additional test quality standards.
