The successful candidate will work alongside the cell culture specialists and cell culture assistants in the cell culture team, which resides within the research services department.
The postholder will be trained to support all cell culture activities, such as routinely dispensing cells, supplementing media, labelling flasks, calibrating equipment and ordering stock. Each cell culture specialist are responsible for specialist science support functions such as quality control of cell products, authentication of cell lines (DNA barcoding) and the production and purification of antibodies and the successful candidate will receive one-to-one training from experts in these areas.
Due to the nature of the departments work and the responsibility for over 200 different cell lines, the cell culture apprentice may be asked to support the cell culture specialists during non-working hours.
The apprenticeship lasts 2 years from the start date, and on completion of the apprenticeship; the successful candidate would have gained the necessary experience to work as a laboratory technician in many academic/medical/biopharmaceutical industries.
